Are you planning a visit to Stroud?

How about an exhilarating three-hour hike or maybe more of a relaxing stroll to soak in the sights? With warmer weather and lighter skies, it's the perfect time to start plotting your next adventure in this charming town.

In our blog, we’re sharing our top 4 best walks in Stroud.

Stroud Trail | Best Walks in Stroud

If you’re looking for a moderate, leisurely walk with the family, consider the Stroud Trail.

This route takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to walk, but can also be enjoyed hiking or running. Dogs are welcome but must always be on the lead for others’ safety.

It’s a popular route, so remember that the roads will be busy when travelling to and from the trail, but don’t let this put you off! It’s still considered one of the best walks in Stroud.

This walk offers a fantastic view of the Stroud Valley and the Severn beyond, as well as some forest trails and exposed paths. There’s also a beautiful church in the village of Stroud around halfway, so you have a mid-point to aim for!

Be prepared to bump into a couple of farm animals on your stroll, including cows, horses, and sheep. They’re often calm and unphased and won’t bat an eyelid, so long as you stay out of the way.

Cotswold Way: Birdlip to Painswick | Best Walks in Stroud

Next on our list of best walks in Stroud is the Birdlip to Painswick route.

This 11.7km walk will take roughly 3 hours and 16 minutes; the area is popular for backpacking, camping, and hiking, so you’ll be sure to meet some friendly faces along the way.

The route is open to walkers all year round, but April through to October is the best time to go. If you walk during these months, you can enjoy the sun on your face with less chance of rain!

The Birdlip to Painswick route passes through woodlands, green areas, and open terrain, and you can stop at several scenic viewpoints, which are ideal for snapping some pics.

Don’t worry about getting lost or glued to your phone to navigate maps, as this route is well sign-posted — leaving you to immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings.

Stroud to Stonehouse (via Stroudwater Canal) | Best Walks in Stroud

Stroud’s famous water canal cannot be missed during your visit.

It’s a short walking route of 5.5km with 52m of elevation, estimated to take just over an hour to complete — the perfect easy-going walk after Sunday lunch or on a hot summer’s day.

It’s a popular place for runners and walkers alike. Feel free to bring your furry companions along, as dogs are welcome and can occasionally be let off the lead.

This relaxed walk has even paths and clear signposting for families visiting with your grandparents. Your little explorers will also feel refreshed and energised with a short burst of walking!

Toadsmoor Woods | Best Walks in Stroud

Toadsmoor Woods is valued as one of the best walks in Stroud for its beauty.

Its circular route makes returning to your car easy after the 10.5km walk, which reaches 416m of elevation. Free parking is available by the roadside at the start of the route in Eastcombe.

It is a moderate walk with some solid hills to work your glutes and leave you feeling a bit sore the next day, but nonetheless, it’s an enjoyable experience.

The walk takes roughly 3 hours and 19 minutes and is most beautiful from July to August. However, if you’re up to the challenge in winter, don’t forget your wellies, boots, or waterproof shoes, as the rain will make the trail rather muddy!

All of these trails are simple to navigate using the AllTrails app. Simply download it on your phone from either the App Store or Google Play, and you’ll have instant access to your trail’s duration, elevation and length.

After your walk, remember to visit Stonehouse Court and pop into our restaurant, Court Brasserie, for a delicious meal, refreshing drinks, and a comfortable seat.
